HEY LOOK!
Open your January Kentucky Living Magazine and read about Creekstone Farms in Henry County! (I thought that face on the cover looked familiar!) The article is actually about two Kentucky Beef Cattle operations of different sizes. The timing is uncanny considering the headlines about the Beef Industry in the last 10 days, keeping in mind that these articles are written and go to press long before we see them.
There are other beef operations in Henry County; one, for example, is Longview. I'd heard of Longview awhile back, but hadn't sampled the product until this past summer when a brought home a steak I bought at the Henry County Farmers Market. Oh Lord it was good! Longview sells grain-feed Premium Aged Beef (aged 14-21 days). Aged beef is most commonly found at finer restaurants, the flavor is wonderful and it practically melts in your mouth. For more information about aged beef or to purchase from Longview Farms email or call 502 845-5562.

SMART IDEAS
Recycling Greeting Cards
I hate to throw away greeting cards. I enjoy getting them, staying in touch with old and new friends, catching up on the news, but it just seems wasteful to drop them in the trash after the holiday. Frankly, I don't--not all of them anyway, because some are sweet reminders to me. Honestly though, you can accumulate a lot more "sweet reminders" than is practical. Also, being environmentally conscious, I just reject the idea of sending them to the land fill. I like to recycle, and there are some clever ideas out there for recycling greeting cards. If you are pressed for time like I am, you don't get to follow through on those "marvelous" greeting card recycling ideas. Well, here's one that is not only environmentally conscious, it is also helping a charitable organization!
Each year, I send my Christmas cards (and others throughout the year) to the St. Jude's Children Ranch. They recycle them into new cards (using the fronts mainly) and this serves as both a physical and financial project for the children at St. Judes. Just send the cards to:
St. Jude's Ranch for Children
100 St. Jude's Street
Boulder City, NV 89005I think this is an extremely beneficial recycling program and just wanted to share it.
(Thanks for the "HEADS UP" from Greta!)
Recycling 7 Days a Week
As part of the County's new contract with Rumpke a recycling dumpster is provided. The container is located at the County Road facility at 714 Property road on the outskirts of New Castle and is open 7 days a week. Most of the materials we have grown accustomed to recycling with the monthly pickup stations (which will still continue, by-the-way) can be taken to the County Road barn and placed in the dumpster. One notable exception is NO GLASS. There is a notice on the contain about exemptions. I just took my plastic jugs and aluminum cans there yesterday, and it looked like I might have been one of the first to take advantage of the benefit. If you can't get to the collection stations (Campbellsburg, New Castle, Eminence, Pleasureville) on the designated Saturdays, now you have an alternative.
For more information see the our new page regarding Rumpke and our previous page about recycling.
Recycling Update
Please note that RECYCLING DATES have CHANGED.
Recycling is now every-other month.
Check the information at: http://www.henrycountyky.com/recycling.htm
Trash Collection Information
By now, most of you should have received your notice in the mail about your garbage collection date and general information. If you haven't, you may call Rumpke about your location and get your day for weekly pick-up--(800) 678-6753 or (502) 568-3800. You can also access the information online at the following page: Henry County Web - County Garbage Collection Information. Remember, this is county information--city limits information may differ!

REMINDER
If you are still using a computer with the Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, and you haven't done your "Updates" please do so SOON! MicroSoft intends to "retire" the updates for these older operating systems and before they do, you'll want to be sure you have then most recent updates to your system. You can do the "LIVE" updates at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, or even smarter, go to the microsoft page where you can download the files to your hard disk and then burn them to a CD for future use. (You'll need to "hunt" for the download versions appropriate to your operating system, so allow yourself some time for the search and the downloading!)
